Lots of us love board games - most journalism conferences boast several gamers. There are a lot of things that board games get right when it comes to mechanics, social interaction, goals and user experience. We’re going to play a few great, short games and think about what makes them great, then work together to brainstorm news products that amplify the things we love about board games. The session will begin with some open play, segue into a discussion (led by me) about the specific things about these games that make them compelling and engaging. (How do we relate to each other while playing? How do we set goals? How do we onboard new users?) The final part of the session will be brainstorming how we bring these game principles into news products, with a focus on coming up with ideas that teams might want to work on during the hack day, or at least a set of principles that we can think about when creating our next newsletter, app, feature, etc.
