// Hour 1 Did you know there was a European CO2 market ? Want to learn about it and see how we built a scraper to analyze it? Come, I'll show you how to dive into its data. At my news agency AEF, we searched during 6 months an answer to the question : Who is really in control of the European CO2 market? Follow the money to see where the power lies, they say. We followed the CO2 upstream, from the subsidiaries to the parent company. To understand the possible reasons of the European CO2 market’s failure, I extracted CO2 emission data on the 14 000 industrial sites subject to the emissions trading scheme all over Europe, and looked at one particular aspect of it: its concentration. The investigation showed that 40 big companies are holding back their governments on CO2 market regulation. What about your country ? Followed by workshop. // Hour 2 Stay tuned, CO2 market session is followed by a hands-on workshop. Let's do this together ;-) Let's unite forces and explore. I will show you how you can access the data on CO2 trade in 31 countries in Europe. Is there any equivalent in South America, Asia or North America that you want to share ? Fancy improving the python scraper to leverage fresh 2016 data? Do you prefer focusing on Polish/Greek/German coal plants? Or do you plan to dig up the "ghost plants" of the EU in cement sector, and track the "fat cats"? Let's talk about our experiences in this area and - if interested - follow the lead during the hackathon.

  • requirements If posible, a video projector would be quite useful. Wi-fi would be nice too, although we can manage with pen drivers.
  • expectedOutcome If one or several teams are interested during the hands-on session, there are still plenty of stories to be searched for during the hackathon. - A map of the installations in one or several countries ? For example, the 13 installations in Cyprus ? - A comparison between European CO2 market and some equivalent in Asia or South America ? - The "fat cats" in Italy ? - The "ghost plants" in the UK ? - The "big 10" in Spain ? - A faster way to do the scraper ? => it's up to you ;-)
