Easy scraping for journalists

You might have heard that journalists need to learn code. That may be true, depending on your point of view, but scraping is one kind of code is a tools journalists can put to use immediately. In fact, you might not have to code at all! Scraping is a ​technical word for a traditional idea: getting ahold of information, whether or not your sources want you to. In this case, the information is data and the sources are websites. We'll go over some out-of-the-box tools for scraping data, plus some DIY techniques that often work even better. The cherry on top is that we're doing the whole thing without cron jobs, without csvs - all you need is Google Sheets!

  • requirements Every attendee should have a computer connected to wifi. Ideally they will also download a free program called Outwit Hub, but that is not necessary. They will also need Google accounts but we can set that up during the session.
